Gaming laptops and the engineering under them

Cooling, power budgets, panel latency and the specification lines that decide whether a gaming laptop holds its frame rate.

Two laptops can carry the same graphics chip and the same processor and perform differently enough that the cheaper one wins. What separates them is thermal design and the power the chassis is allowed to feed the chip — both of which are published, and neither of which appears in the headline.

The specification that matters

Graphics power, in watts, is the single most predictive line on a gaming laptop's specification, and manufacturers are required to publish it. It is usually in the footnotes, sometimes labelled as maximum graphics power, occasionally split into a base figure and a boost figure. A chassis that feeds its graphics chip near the top of its allowed range will beat the same chip in a thinner chassis, consistently, in every title.

And the specification that does not

Memory capacity past the point where games stop swapping. Storage capacity, as long as the drive is not the cheapest available. The refresh rate of a panel the machine cannot feed. Marketing names for cooling systems. None of these are useless, but none of them separate two machines the way the power budget does.
